James Cull

Associate Principal, Design Director

James Cull is the Design Director and an Associate Principal in Rottet Studio’s New York office. He brings an extensive knowledge of designing innovative luxury interiors for leading hospitality, residential, commercial, and retail clients around the world. He is passionate about creating immersive design experiences that reflect the authenticity of a place, in order to create landmark projects that embrace the brand, market, and business aspirations that are unique to each property. In June 2018, he was awarded Interior Design magazine’s HiP Award for Designer of the Year, in the Rising Star category.

James began his design career at Yabu Pushelberg, an international design studio in New York City, where he was responsible for large-scale projects from design concept and narrative development, through construction documentation and administration. He prides himself on his ability to manage and successfully coordinate with the project architect, landscape and lighting designers, structural and mechanical engineers, and collaborate with the client in order to ensure the design intent is memorably realized in the finished product.

James moves seamlessly between all building scales and disciplines, from master-planning to bespoke furniture detailing, designing compelling spaces that have a strong vision and a rigorous approach. He is a hands-on director who is present throughout the life of your project, leading a talented team of designers who create functional, aspirational, and layered interiors that enthusiastically embrace the unique characteristics of each site.

He holds his Masters of Science degree in Interior Design from the Pratt Institute, where he completed additional coursework in design theory, graphic design, branding, product design and design history. His graduate thesis explored the intersection of installation art and interior architecture. He is an undergraduate alumnus of Boston University and spent multiple summers abroad in France, where he contributed to books on contemporary art and conceptual furniture design, prototyping, and fabrication. He joined the Rottet Studio team in January 2016.
